Mumbai Shopping Diary-Mangaldas Market-Chapter 6

Hello! didi..........batao na kya chahiye................apne boutique ke liye khareed na hai? ek se badh kar ek party wear design hai hamare paas..........ek baar catalogue toh dekho, saare  designers yehi se maal utahte hain.(Hello sister, say na what you want ,want to buy for your boutique, we have some amazing partywear, have a look at the catalogue, all designers source from here only)  Really!!! ofcourse,  the shopkeeper informs me,now what really attracted me towards his small shop in the first place  was  this really beautifull!!! purple color net saree.I instantly fell in love with this  gorgeous beauty and with a throbbing heart request for the price.

Being an Indian, of course I love sarees and it is my passion  to collect sarees from different Indian states whether its  kantha,bandhani,patola,banarasi,kanjivaram,upada,ikkat,phulkari........the list is endless. So I have been looking out for a net saree for quite some time, one glance and I know for sure this is the one for me.My heart is racing because in my mind  I have already  decided that I want it, and once I really like   something then my dreams are dominated with the images of the said. So I am just hoping that its in my budget, fingers crossed  and voilaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, its only for Rs 4000........ I am really happyyyyy but without showing too much excitement, I try to haggle and the best price that he can offer me is Rs 3500...........so what do I do, of course I buy it,sillies!!!

After a  successful purchase at a very reasonable price, I am very excited because I know that at a branded showroom the same would cost me not less than Rs 8000 or more. Next on my agenda is to buy fabric for myself, because my cousin's wedding is coming up and I want to present myself in best of my fineries, I come across this stall which has some of the most beautiful and colorful fabrics chanderi, brocade, satins, animal prints,georgette,crepe........breadthtaking...... you name it and its here and the prices are to die for.I bought brocade in  hot pink color at Rs 350 per meter and animal print very much in vogue at Rs 120 per meter. As i move foward i come across this shop which sells fabric for men's sherwani, prices start from Rs 300 to Rs 900 per meter. So all you grooms head towards mangaldas market, you will be amazed by the variety stocked here.

You can also buy fabric for suiting and shirting from this market at amazing prices.I bought blazer fabric  for myself in purple and mint green color at Rs 250 per meter, yipeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! You can also buy colorful dupattas, scarves, imitation jewellery, soft toys, crockery, bed covers, fabric of all kinds and all seasons. Its an amazing place to be in.You can build your complete wedding trousseau here. Mumbai Shopping Diary-Crawford Market-Chapter 5

On my  way to Crawford market, the cabbie informs me that we will be passing by dharavi, infamous for its slum area. But my interest is aroused in this zip code because I have been told that you can buy leather goods from here at a wholesale rate………….. My cabbie is very informative and gives me the exact address to these stores, so this is definitely next on my shopping trip.
After a half an hour tete-e-tete with the taxi driver, I finally reach mumbai’s oldest and most famous market which is housed in a Victorian style building. One look at the building and I feel like have been transported to a different era. It has an world charm to it.Though i must tell you that it can be really crowded at times. And my advice is  to wear comfortable shoes and dress discreetly as this area is a little conservative.
A fruit seller, very kindly informs me that this is a wholesale market and I can buy imported fruits and vegetables from here. I was quite mesmerized by dragon fruit and rambutan-malyasian lychee. I almost bought them but had a last minute change of heart, may be next time. You can also buy a  variety of   imported food items like chocolates, cheese and confectionary. Pasta, herbs, sauces, wines, marshmallows, dry fruits, dates, hazel nut pastes and the list is endless. For christmas if you want to gift your friends and family with cakes and chocolates then you can buy beautiful packing boxes from here.As christmas is just around the corner, you can buy decorative items for your christmas tree from crawford. You can also buy cosmetics at a wholesale rate loreal shampoos, condtioners, body washes, body lotions, perfumes, deodrants etc etc.You name it  and its here. There is something for everybody here.

Crawford is the heart of mumbai. You can see the true mumbaikar spirit here.I had a great time and intend to come back here very soon……………………………

Mumbai Shopping Diary-High Street Phoenix-Chapter 4

Its day four and i am in no mood to bear the mumbai heat, so i have decided to chill out and head towards the most happening lifestyle destination in mumbai "The High Street Phoenix".Lower Parel  very proudly houses this "it " shopping mall.

The  very first thing you will notice about this elite shopping mall is this really tall chimney........As i walk into this huge complex, i realise that it has  been divided into  three different shopping malls the palladium mall, the grand galleria and the skyzone. Now the palladium mall houses highends brands like Burberry,Paul& Shark,Dkny,Canali,Emporio Armani, Rohit bal,Anita Dongre,Zara,Mango and many more. The Grand galleria and the Skyzone house the usual brands like Marks & Spencers,Pantaloons,Lifestyle,United colors of benetton etc etc.

The Bombay store, Tushiv,West2india are three stores that i found interesting. The bombay store is a contemporary lifestlye store,it specialises in indianised gifts and home products.Their product line is very quirky. They have hand bags with digital prints of an indian maharaja and maharani, match box with an elephant print, silk scarves, marble inlay artefacts, bookmark brass cycle, nameplates and so on.............................

Tushiv offers sculptures with a difference....they are holographic sculptures that touch the soul and connect with you whenever you move because they are three dimesional. These are images that follow you from whichever angle you look at them. Each sculpture is individually handcrafted. The collection includes shiva,ganesha,jesus,buddha............ very interesting!!!

West2india claims to be gateway to indian spirtuality. They offer spiritual clothing for indian gods like dhotiset ,chudi,chitrapat,gaddi,mukut,dress,fan,throne.........very adorable.
Having said that, i had a lot of expectation from this mall since its mumbai's best.I kind of feel disappointed because i come from delhi and we have malls like emporio, dlf promenade and ambience mall, vasant kunj, select city walk, saket and compared to them it kind of fell short. But i must applaud phoenix mills as they transformed a defunct, disintegrating textile mill into mumbai's finest retail address. The phoenix symbolises rebirth and it surely has resurrected itself from ashes.... so kudos for that.

Mumbai Shopping Diary-Colaba Causeway-Chapter3

Well today  i have decided to head towards colaba causeway, mumbai's another very  famous flea market. This is located in south mumbai and i am putting up in andheri east.I have been told that in mumbai you can travel by auto rickshaws only till Bandra and from there on you have  to catch a taxi. So i have decided that i am going to take rickshaw till bandra highway and from there on i will travel by taxi to colaba causeway.

On my way to colaba, the taxi driver very politely inquires whether i would like to go via worli sea link as i would encounter less traffic and reach the destination faster. So i decide to go via worli sea link and for that i have to pay a toll of Rs 50.Well i dont know whether i reached the destination faster but i most definitely enjoyed the view. The sea link is a sight to the sore eye.

Wow!! it took me almost two hours to reach my final destination. Now that i am finally here i quite like the place, its very vibrant, buzzing with a lot of activity, the place is thronged by foreigners and indians alike. The whole atmosphere is very lively. The pavement is lined with stalls that are so colorful. You can buy some very interesting things from this street. What really piqued my interest were antique brass stalls, gramphones, vctorian era clocks, colorful lamps, magnifying glasses etc etc.You can buy kolhapuri chappals, scarves, tops, dresses, bags,belts..phew and the list goes on.
The jewellery here is to do die for specially the ones in stones.I went berserk shopping for the same, some of the pieces are extremely beautiful, you will find necklaces made out of rose quartz, turquoise and zillion variety of stones. But i am not very confident about the authenticity of the same.Again everything here is very reasonably priced and the rule here  is to bargain, bargain and bargain with a smile.I really had lots of fun shopping at causeway. A stone's throw away is Gate of india and the legendary taj.

I am done with shopping for today and i  head towards Piccadily restaurant as i am very hungry. This restaurant serves iranian and lebaneese food.I order for lebaneese mushroom masala roll and a watermelon juice.Yummy, as this was my first interaction with lebaneese food culture.Another successful day comes to an end and the hunt continues.................................

Mumbai Shopping Diary-Juhu Tara Road-Chapter 2

Well, after my visit to linking road, bandra. My next stopover is Juhu Tara Road, one of the most affluent areas of mumbai. The Legend of  the  indian film industry "Mr Amitabh Bachchan" resides in this posh locality.

One of my friends recommended that i should check out the fashion stores on this street. So i decided to walk the whole mile bearing the mumbai heat.I must say that this chic lane houses some very high end fashion boutiques. The first store that i walked into was by Jyotsana Tiwari, her indian wear and bridal collection is very interesting.I also loved the collection  by  Aza,Kimaya,Gimmick,Sillouette,Libas,Millionaire,Shringar. Their indian wear collection is just to die for. They will definitely seduce your senses.

Some other boutiques on this street are Ropaje,Peacock bride,Suruchi sarees,Gold leaf,Masaba,Ritu kumar,Anita dongre,Satya paul.
All in all a designer hub.Every store has something different to offer.Definitely i have found a great place where my clients can shop from for their wedding trousseaus and their traditional indian wear. You can also find some beautiful gowns at these boutiques.
Well, my day has successfully come to an  end.My search for the next hottest shopping destination continues.........................
